PATTACHITRA

Patta Chitra is a Odisha’s famous folk painting. It is a Sanskrit, Patta means Cloth and Chitra means Picture.

Features of Patta Chitra

1. Patta Chitra is a picture painted on the piece of cloth.
2. It is related closely to Shri Jagannath Cult and the temple traditions of Shri Jagannath Mandir, Puri.
3. Themes – mainly Mythological and folk themes.

• Thia Badhia – depiction of the temple of Jagannath.
• Krishna Leela – Lord Krishna’s childhood stories
• Dasabatara Patti – ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu
• Panchamukhi Ganesha -  depiction of Lord Ganesha with his five heads.

4. Materials used in the paints are naturally derived from flowers, vegetables, mineral sources, etc, making it sustainable as well as environment friendly.
5. The borders are adorned with beautiful floral designs all with bright colours.

Patta Chitra became an important art form with the Ornamentation of Lord Jagannath in the innermost sanctum, even paintings are done on the cloth or pata of the deities.
