SAMVIDHAN DIWAS (CONSTITUTION DAY)
It is observed annually on November 26 since 2015 to commemorate the Adoption of Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949.
The Constitution as adopted on November 26,1949, contained a Preamble, 395 Articles and 8 Schedules.
The Government of India is organising an event to celebrate Constitution Day in Old Parliament Building (Samvidhan Sadan). In this event the Government will release Translated Version of Constitution of India in Nine Languages – Assamese, Bodo, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi and Telugu.
This year a commemorative booklet titled “Bharat ke Samvidhan main Kala aur Calligraphy” will be released.
Some Facts about the Constitution of India
- Dr B R Ambedkar is recognized as the “Father of the Constitution”.
- The original Constitution was handwritten by Prem Behari Narain Raizada in flowing italic style. He was the Calligrapher of Indian Constitution.
- The Original version of Indian Constitution was beautified and decorated by artists from Shantiniketan including Nand Lal Bose and Beohar Rammanohar Sinha.
- Major changes in the Indian Constitution were introduced by 7th, 42nd, 44th, 73rd, 74th, 97th and 101st Constitutional Amendments.
- Supreme Court in Kesavananda Bharti Case (1973), ruled that Constituent power of Parliament under Article 368 does not enable it to alter the “Basic Structure of the Constitution”.
- Some provisions of the Constitution pertaining to Citizenship, Provisional Parliament, Temporary and Transsitional Provisions and short titles contained in Article 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 60, 324, 366, 367, 379, 380, 388, 391, 392 and 393 came to force on November 26, 1949 itself, while major provisions came into force on January 26, 1950.
