SANCHAR SAATHI APP
The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has made it mandatory for mobile phone manufacturers and importers to pre – install Sanchar Saathi app on phones meant for sale in India and that its functionalities are not disabled or restricted.
What is the use of Sanchar Saathi App?
- The App is intended to verify authenticity of IMEIs used in mobile devices to safeguard citizens from purchasing non – genuine handsets.
- It will protect users from fraud, identity misuse and mobile theft.
Potential Challenges –
- Spoofed or tampered IMEIs can create problems as the same IMEI can be activated on different devices simultaneously.
- Breach of Data can happen.
- Risk of Malware or Spyware attacks from Cybercriminals.
The challenges are addressed in the recent Guidelines like DoT has assured that the app does not collect user data according to its Google Play listing. The lost phone recovery rate reaching 50,000 devices monthly as of October.
